#1. When coupling a tractor to a trailer that lacks spring brakes, you back up the tractor to the trailer. Then you exit the cab and do what?
After you’ve backed up to the trailer, check the alignment of the tractor and trailer before you attempt to connect them. Check that the centre of the trailer apron lines up with the centre of the fifth wheel. Check that the trailer apron is touching the fifth wheel directly above the fifth wheel pivot points. Also check that the trailer parking (spring) brakes are set. If the trailer doesn’t have spring brakes, connect the air and electrical lines from the tractor to the trailer, charge the trailer air brake system, and apply the trailer service brakes.
