#1. When adjusting a manual slack adjuster, how can you tell whether you are turning the adjusting bolt in the correct direction?
When a slack adjuster is properly adjusted, the brake linings should be quite close to but not touching the inside of the brake drum. To adjust a manual slack adjuster, you need to turn the adjusting bolt either clockwise or counterclockwise until the brake linings contact the inside of the brake drum. You’ll know you are turning in the correct direction once the cam starts to rotate in the same direction as if the brakes were being applied. Once this is accomplished, turn the adjusting bolt in the opposite direction about 1/3 of a turn to re-establish correct running clearance between the lining and the drum.
