Your service brakes are more likely to fade (become less effective) when higher demands are placed on the brakes, such as heavier loads, higher speeds, long downhill grades or emergency stops. Many vehicles have engine brakes, retarders or auxiliary brakes to assist the service brakes in slowing the vehicle, thus reducing the strain on the service brakes.
