In cold weather, moisture that has collected in the supply tank can freeze, and the ice can stop air brake valves from working properly. Two different devices can help alleviate this problem. An air dryer removes much of the moisture from the compressed air before it enters the supply tank. An alcohol evaporator puts alcohol vapour into the air to reduce the likelihood of freezing. (Alcohol has a lower freezing point than water.)
